I rank well for the weirdest things.
Recently I've been trying out some web analytics tools and I thought I would share some of my discoveries. I'm mainly going to talk about the search queries I rank well for. If you are interested then read on, if not then let me summarise by saying I rank well for the strangest things.
Some of the search queries I rank well for make sense, things like 'msn contact list grabber', 'msn contacts grabber' and 'msn list grabber' all have the original post about the class I wrote to
grab an msn contact list ranking well. My
css and javascript file compaction post ranks well for 'file compaction'. The post I made on a
google pagerank script ranks well for 'Google PR script +PHP'.
These all make sense and indeed it is nice to see. Especially the results for queries relating to the msn contact grabbing script. I like the idea that now anyone looking for such a script will be presented with a version that is freely available rather than multiple websites all trying to sell the script for around about $100. Which was the case when I was initially looking.
There are some really strange results though. These are both in Windows Live or whatever msn is calling itself now. My quick post on a new
intensity histogram article at bubble.ro comes up 4th in the results for 'intensity histogram' and 1st for 'creating histogram image'. Then I actually rank first for 'regex cheat sheet' with my post highlighting a new
regex cheat sheet at ilovejackdaniels.
Both of those posts were really short, essentially just a link to the resource and a little bit of background. I've no explanation for it but I'm certainly not complaining.
Ok, enough with the self-absorbed discussion and hopefully back to some genuinely useful posts soon. The site redesign (yes it is still ongoing) seems to be expanding in scope and it's bringing up some interesting points, the search results being one of them.
