Handling array data with Cache_Lite

On a recent project I wanted to cache data and remembering how easy Cache_Lite was to use in my recent article on displaying a google pagerank I decided to use it again. Unfortunately I ran into a problem, it seemed to only allow you to cache strings and I wanted to cache an array. No problem though, I just serialized the data and then cached it.

Turns out though that Cache_Lite can actually handle this automatically. All you need to do is change the 'automaticSerialization' entry in the options array to TRUE and it's good to go.

This is slightly slower than just caching a string so you may want to check whether it is still faster than accessing the resource directly, particularly if the array is large, but I think in most instances serializing and caching will still work out faster.

Hello Jonathan,
I use your script for displaying the Google-Pagerank inside a toplist.
It works fine, but doesn't cache anything :-(
And I don't find any 'automaticSerialization' entry.
Cache folder exists, Cache_Lite is installed, what failed?

I'm glad you find the google pagerank script useful. You shouldn't need to serialize the data from that script so best to leave it set to false as activating it will slow things down slightly.

The first problem which occurs to me with caching not working is that you may not have the permissions on the cache folder set correctly. I can't remember the exact setting you need but if you change permissions to 777 and caching still doesn't work then permissions aren't the problem.

Hi Jonathan,

don't know what happend but it's caching.
The permissions were set correctly, but I think, after installing the PEAR-package the server had to reinitialize somthing like daemons or anything else. Don't know.
Waiting one night rules ;-)
Now it runs perfectly. Thank you for this script :-)
